In 1980, the City Council designated 344 acres in downtown as a community redevelopment area under the Florida Statutes. As a result of this legislation, the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) was also established. The purpose of this action was to stop the deterioration of the downtown area and give people a reason to come to downtown Boca Raton.

The mission of the CRA is to advocate, administer the policies, and assist the public, downtown property owners and businesses in order to achieve the CRA Vision of the Downtown.

In a series of actions that began in 1982, the City Council adopted guidelines for land use control and for transportation and parking concept and design to be implemented in redeveloping the area. The area continued to languish. In 1986, the Agency undertook a public initiative to stimulate redevelopment by developing a master plan which included numerous infrastructure improvements, and provided a detailed framework within which redevelopment could occur.

The City Council members serve as the CRA members. The City Council members select the Chairman of the CRA from among their members.

The City of Boca Raton - Offering a Unique Business Environment

Bloomberg Businessweek reports that Boca Raton is number two on the list of top ten places to start new companies. ZoomProspector.com, a business location Web site, weighed 11 factors - including the number of startups, quality of the workforce, and resources like universities and venture capital - to compile a list of the top places to build a new business. That’s why Boca Raton is refered to as "Silicon Beach".

The City of Boca Raton provides a unique environment for business – a strong business environment, with economic resources and a well-educated and talented workforce, all within a community known for its high quality of life. Boca Raton is a rich blend of corporate and regional headquarters, small businesses, and innovative start-up companies. There are economic opportunities for all types of companies and businesses.

The birthplace of the of the IBM personal computer, Boca Raton has grown from a small agricultural community to a large regional employment center with one of the largest business concentrations in South Florida. In fact, about half of all of the office buildings in Palm Beach County are in Boca Raton, and a number of national and international corporations call Boca Raton home.

Boca Raton has easy access to road, rail, and air transportation. In addition to the interstate highway connections, railway connections, and an executive airport within the City, several commercial airports and two seaports are in close proximity to the City.

And the backdrop to this successful business environment is a community well known for it high quality of life. Boca Raton has miles of pristine beaches, beautiful parks and landscaping, a wide variety of shops and restaurants, environmental programs, and a variety of cultural events. Boca Raton has high quality public and private schools, and several colleges and universities. It is a financially stable, full-service community, with excellent facilities and services and a low crime rate. Boca Raton truly is a premier community.
