Tactical Team arrestee also suspected of iPhone fraud
Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, July 23, officers of the Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team were conducting routine surveillance at the BP gas station, 5440 West Glades Road. A white Nissan Maxima entered the property and caught the attention of one officer due to its dark tinted windows. The officer also learned that it was a rental and given the propensity of rental vehicles with dark tinted windows being involved in distraction thefts and auto burglaries, the officer paid closer attention. He observed the driver park at a pump, go into the store, return to his car and drive to another area of the parking lot.
As the driver, Derrick Brown, prepared to get out of the car a second time, officers approached him and immediately smelled an odor of marijuana emanating from Brown and from the interior of the car. Brown told officers he smoked earlier in the car and added that he did not have a driver’s license. Officers arrested and searched Brown and found an MDMA gel capsule in his pants pocket, a small amount of marijuana in the car and several debit/credit cards in his wallet, with either no name or someone else’s name.
Also inside the car, was a shopping bag from the Apple store, which contained four new iPhones 5s that were just purchased with cash. They also found multiple receipts and account statements for other iPhones purchased from various locations throughout the tri-county area over the last few days. Officers contacted loss prevention at the Apple store and were told that they had just “flagged” Brown for fraud for using a social security number belonging to another person, but the flag hadn’t been activated until he had already purchased the phones.
Brown was arrested and charged with possession of MDMA, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.
