Juvenile car thief caught in Central Florida
Keys left in console of unlocked car
Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, May 22, just before 3:00 in the morning, Cody Allen Huff went to the Mobil Gas Station, 198 West Yamato Road. Huff told Boca Raton Police officers that he backed his 2001 Volvo V70 into a spot on the east side of the parking lot. He also said he placed the keys in the center console and went inside the business, leaving his car unlocked. When Huff left the business, about 5 minutes later, he discovered his car was gone.
Detectives went to the Mobil station and watched the surveillance video, which showed an unidentified juvenile walking across the parking lot shortly after Huff entered the store.
Later that day, Boca Raton officers were notified that the vehicle was recovered in Orange County, near Orlando. Florida Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless driver and before they arrived, the Volvo crashed. Troopers located the driver, a 14 year old male from Pompano Beach, with the assistance of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, then was arrested for stealing the Volvo.
To help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime, the Boca Raton Police remind you to never leave the keys in your vehicle or leave a running vehicle unattended.
