Man used stolen identity to obtain $100,000 in medical treatment

Boca Raton, FL – On Friday, February 12, officials from the Boca Raton Community Hospital, 800 Meadows Road called the Boca Raton Police Services Department to report a fraud. They told Officer Joseph Pirro that a man checked himself into the hospital twice for extensive medical treatment, using what they believed to be a false name and social security number.

Officials told Officer Pirro that on January 10th, between 11:00 and 11:30 p.m., a man entered the emergency room, complaining of chest pain.  The man, who identified himself as Giovanni Ovesta, was admitted into the hospital.  Ovesta provided several different addresses where he claimed to have residency, including Miami Beach and Honolulu, Hawaii.  He also offered a social security number, medical insurance information, and the name of an emergency contact.  Ovesta received medical treatment totaling close to $86,000.  After Ovesta was discharged, hospital officials learned his insurance information was false.

On February 11th, between 11:00 and 11:30 p.m., Ovesta again came to the emergency room, suffering from chest pains.  Ovesta provided the hospital with the same information he gave them in January, but this time he included a local address.  Ovesta received approximately $20,000 in medical treatment.  Hospital officials ran a credit check on the social security number Ovesta provided and discovered it belonged to a different person, who lives in Arizona.  At this point, hospital officials contacted the Boca Raton Police.

Officer Pirro spoke with Ovesta, who gave him the same information he had given the hospital.  Ovesta said he was conducting sea trials on a yacht when he became ill.  Documents that were found with Ovesta's belongings indicated he was actually Giovanni Mangino.  As Officer Pirro proceeded with his investigation, he was able to locate a booking photograph from the Miami Beach Police Department, which confirmed that Ovesta was Giovanni Mangino.

On Saturday, February 13th before Mangino checked out of the hospital, Officer Pirro arrested him for fraud.  Mangino is charged with organized scheme to defraud, committing fraud to a healthcare provider, grand theft, and identity theft.
