Two arrested with thousands of dollars worth of stolen clothing

Boca Raton, FL – On Wednesday, July 24 at about 3:00 p.m., officers of the Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team were conducting surveillance in the area of the BP store located at 5440 West Glades Road, when they saw a Nissan Altima enter the parking lot. The driver parked the car and the passenger went into the store. When the passenger returned several minutes later, the driver left the parking lot and committed a traffic violation.

Officers followed the car as it entered Town Center Mall and discovered that it was a rental vehicle. Officers watched as the driver, later identified as Shemeka Wilson, drove down several parking lot aisles near the Container Store, passing numerous open parking spaces. Wilson sped up then left the parking lot. Officers stopped the vehicle a short distance away and made contact with Wilson and passenger, Latoya Jones.

Wilson told officers she drove from Miami to go shopping at the mall because she likes certain stores. She also said that at the last minute, she changed her mind and left the mall. Jones added that they stopped at the BP store, where she pumped gas and left to come to the mall but were unable to find any parking spaces.

After further investigation the officers searched the car, and found two shopping bags, which contained clothing with the sales tags attached and no sales receipts. In the trunk of the car, they found a garbage bag filled with clothing with the sales tags attached, three smaller bags also containing clothing with the sales tags attached and a “booster bag”. Officers also noted that several pieces of clothing still had the anti-theft sensors attached to them. The value of clothing in the car totaled $2,828.62. When an officer searched Jones, she found a small foil lined potato chip bag, which contained three clothing sensors as well as the remains of the potato chips.

Officers arrested the two for loitering and prowling, attempting to commit retail fraud with others, and possession of anti-shoplifting countermeasures. Wilson was also charged with driving on a suspended license.
