Boca Raton, FL – On Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at about 10:30 a.m., Boca Raton Police Department’s Tactical Team officers observed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Runner’s Edge, 3195 North Federal Highway.
During the surveillance, an officer observed the suspicious grey Dodge Charger, driven by Derrick Phillips, stop directly behind a maroon Kia Optima. A male, later identified as Theophers Cooper, got out of the Charger, crouched next to the driver’s side of the Optima, and looked into the window for several seconds. Cooper then stood up, looked directly at the officer and returned to the Charger. Phillips backed the car into another spot.
The officer, realizing his cover was blown, approached Cooper and Phillips. Both Cooper and Phillips admitted they were in Boca Raton to commit burglaries. When officers searched the vehicle, they found a Florida driver’s license, debit card, and a business license belonging to the victim of an auto burglary that occurred earlier at the Dunkin Donuts, 777 South Federal Highway. Officers also found a window punch concealed in the driver’s seat and a small amount of marijuana on the floorboards of the Charger.
Officers arrested Cooper and Phillips and charged them with burglary to an auto, attempted burglary to an auto, possession of marijuana, and possession of stolen property. Phillips was also charged with possession of a burglary tool and driving without a license.
