Macy's ring thief nabbed
Boca Raton, FL On Wednesday, November 17, a white male walked into Macy's, 5700 West Glades Road, and asked to see a diamond engagement ring valued at almost $4,000. As soon as the clerk handed the ring to the suspect, he ran out of the store and fled on a blue and white motorcycle.
On Monday, November 22, Boca Raton Detective Giumenta received an anonymous tip from a person claiming the suspect was Michael Tobias. Based on a background review, the detective learned Tobias has an extensive criminal history and that on November 17th, Tobias had pawned an 18 carat, white gold diamond solitaire ring at a pawn shop in West Palm Beach. The detective also discovered Tobias owns a blue and white Suzuki motorcycle.
During the investigation, Detective Giumenta learned Tobias had been arrested by Broward Sheriff's Office deputies, after he stole a necklace from a JC Penney in Pompano Beach. Tobias refused to speak with Detective Giumenta.
The sales associate at Macy's was able to identify the ring that Tobias pawned as the one that was stolen. The employee at the pawn shop identified Tobias as the person who pawned the engagement ring and the pawn shop surveillance video shows the male wearing the same dark coat and carrying the same white motorcycle helmet as the suspect in the Macy's video. Macy's identified the pawned ring through a serial number on the ring, as the one that was stolen.
Detective Giument charged Tobias with grand theft, dealing in stolen property, and false verification of ownership.
